Aug 11, 2021... As Covid-19 takes dramatic toll locally and across the globe, the Minister of Communications, Science and Technology (MCST), Honourable Ts’oinyana Rapapa and his entourage launched deployment of internet infrastructure at Lerotholi Polytechnic (LP) today.
The Minister highlights the importance of USF wireless network to enhance provision of easy and secure network across LP and other institutions of higher learning in the country, for research purposes especially in this era of Covid-19.
He states that over One Million Maloti is set aside for implementation of this work at LP, saying the work is undertaken at a fragile time when all is not well due to the virus.
“However, it is our expectation that Contractors – Global IT will complete the work within stipulated period so that students can access internet services.”
Global IT will amongst others ensure fourteen indoor cisco access points, thirty one indoor access points, wireless controller to the access points and switch (6) to be connected through high speed fiber. He appeals to all to ensure protection of this valuable equipment so that students are able to meet the demand of today's technological world.
LP Rector, Professor Sepiriti Tlali points out that today's launch will go a long way in easing the institution projects in the area of automation and administration processes, information management, business application and tools, ICT tools and infrastructure as well as ICT governance and management.
He appreciates the Ministry of Communications for launching this initiative as well as the Ministry of Education for their endless support in ensuring that students access education despite the advent of Covid-19.
Sharing similar thoughts, Executive Secretary, Universal Service Fund (USF) Mr. Soko Thabisi mentions that promotion of digital literacy is at the core of Lesotho Government hence USF which also seeks to ensure transformation in the areas of broadcasting, postal and telephone.
“Three years from now, we are hopeful that the network Infrastructure will go a long way in contributing positively towards quality education.”
The Minister' s visit at LP forms part of the Ministry’s mission in providing affordable, sustainable, accessible and reliable communication services to the nation.
His entourage was made up of management in the Ministry of Communications led by Principal Secretary (PS) Mrs. ‘Mabataung Khalane – Chairperson USF as well as USF team through Lesotho Communications Authority (LCA) to mention but a few.
