February 11, 2021…Information Communications and Technology (ICT) remains key if the Ministry of Communications, Science and Technology (MCST) is to prosper in the Fourth Industrial Revolution 4IR.
Director ICT department in the Ministry of Communications, Mr. Khiba Masiu says through United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the department is currently reviewing ICT Policy 2005.
He said the intention is to have a policy that can correlate well and meet the demands in the 4IR world, while also driving towards accomplishing e-Government goals under the Ministry.
Again, Mr. Masiu highlights the need to ensure guidance of ‘cyber-security,’ the drill of protecting systems, networks, and programs from digital attacks.
These he notes are cyber-attacks commonly meant at accessing, changing, or destroying sensitive information; extorting money from users; or interrupting daily business processes.
“As such, the policy will guide us on how best to protect as we look forward towards Cyber Security Bill getting a green light in Parliament,” he stresses.
ICT Director explains that it is challenges brought by use of these technologies, which also have a potential to grow the economy if looked into, thereby bringing up solutions in the modern world.
Sharing a brief about the Bill, he indicates the Bill seeks for establishment of Computer Incidence Response Team, to play a leading role in making sure that the law implemented effectively while cyber-security swindles are rooted out.
All this are enshrined in the Ministry’s Strategic Plan 2020/21 – 2022/23 after the expiry of the previous plan 2013/14-2016/17 as according to the Director.
ICT is one of the seven departments in the Ministry whose objectives include assisting the Ministry to fully meet demand of services and products particularly those relating to technology.
