November 29, 2021…National Assembly has resolved to adopt the National Media Policy, 2021 in its sitting earlier today, Monday.
Acceptance of this document follows a motion moved by the Minister of Communications, Science and Technology (MCST), Honourable Tsóinyana Rapapa.
This policy has been developed by the National Reforms Authority (NRA), it was approved by the Cabinet and presented in the house on Friday September 17, 2021 as a framework document that will guide media processes in Lesotho.
Adoption of this policy precedes the 2022 general polls when media remains an integral part of reforms processes meant to ensure transformation, thus enhance promotion of peace and tranquillity in the country.
Meanwhile, in August this year the Minister of Communications, Honourable Rapapa met with NRA team so as to level the grounds, have common understanding with regard to the document.
NRA is entrusted with the responsibility to ensure implementation of Multi-stakeholder National Dialogue II Report held in Maseru on November 2019 # “The Lesotho We Want.”
Chapter 7 (Media Reforms) of the said report revealed poor capacity of media practitioners to perform their fiduciary roles effectively as an issue, hence adoption of the Media Policy was recommended.
Other sectors under reforms include Constitutional Reforms (Chapter 1), Parliamentary Reforms (Chapter 2), Security Sector Reforms (Chapter 3), Justice Sector Reforms (Chapter 4), Public Service Reforms (Chapter 5) and Economic Reforms (Chapter 6).
