World Post Day is celebrated every year on 9th October. The day is celebrated because it commemorates the establishment of Universal Postal Union (UPU) that was formed in 1874. The union is an organ of United Nations’ organ that is responsible for Postal services.

For 2021 UPU decided to celebrate on the 8th because 9th is Saturday. The theme for the year is as follows; “INNOVATE TO RECOVER” – which honours the spirit of adaptation and creativity throughout the pandemic.

World Post Day in 2021 is also celebrated to mark the 50th anniversary of the UPU’s International letter writing competition.

We look back on a year like no other, as it has brought a lot of suffering; People have fought hard for their health, their livehoods, and even their lives. Not all fights were won. We grief with all those who have lost their loved ones or friends.

Despite the global crisis, we also experienced an amazing amount of continuity. People remained in close contact digitally. Thanks to technology, as many could continue working from home.

Postal Services also experienced a slump in revenues during the pandemic as the pandemic pushed some economies into recession. However, in as much as the postal sector is undergoing challenges globally, there are pockets of opportunities for Postal Services specifically in E-commerce, Financial inclusion and Digitalisation of the Services.

A plea from Lesotho Postal Services is to work hard to improve service delivery levels to customers in order to ensure that Postal Services remain relevant. This will be by;

  • Becoming a reliable partner to consumers and retailers

  • Remain the backbone for regional and international trade flows, and

  • Availing continuous supply chain for customers of all sizes and in different sectors.

It is against this background that we make an appeal to all stakeholders in Lesotho to work together with Lesotho Postal Services on all endeavours’ to;

  • Identify gaps in our systems

  • Develop plans of actions to close the gaps

  • Advancing interoperability of our different national systems and further implement Postal Strategy.

THIS WILL BE A PROPER WAY TO CELEBRATE THE WORLD POST DAY by supporting postal services
