The Minister of Communications Science and Technology Chief Thesele 'Maseribane on Wednesday officially launched the Office of the Government Spokesperson in a media briefing held in Maseru.

Speaking at this event, the Minister stated that through the Office which is now responsible to the Ministry of Communications, Science and Technology, the government is not getting rid of ministerial spokespersons as there will be coordination between them and the Office.

He indicated that the Office of the Government Spokesperson will among others be responsible for dissemination of information on the policies, programmes and achievements of the Government of Lesotho, while ensuring free flow of information to the public and safeguarding freedom of the press in general.

The Minister added that the Office will also provide an enabling environment for the media sector to play an important role in providing accurate and timely information to the public. He further added that it will communicate the flagship programmes directly to the beneficiaries through appropriate multimedia campaigns.

He said the Office will regularise schedule of government press conferences and other communications events designated to disseminate timely information to the public through the mass media. He added that it will coordinate government messages in line with its strategic communications priorities.

Chief Maseribane pointed out that the Minister of Communications, Science and Technology will not be working alone in this Office as there will be supporting staff which will among others help create and manage government's social media channels. He remarked that the social media is often used to misinform the public hence why it is important for the Office to be active in their various platforms so that they can clarify government's position on different issues.

He said there will be weekly press conferences to be held each Thursday to inform the public about decisions made in the Cabinet which sits every Tuesday.

Initially the Office of Government Spokesperson was responsible to the Office of the Prime Minister.
